Meet the Authors
Carolyn Barraclough
Carolyn Barraclough is an experienced author and teacher trainer. She has a BA honours degree in English and French from Bristol University. She also holds a Post-Graduate Certificate of Education from Bath University and a TEFL certificate. Her special interests are motivating young teenagers and maximising memorability - vaues which are reflected in Activate!
Carolyn taught EFL in Greece and the UK for many years before moving into EFL publishing. She then worked as an educational consultant and editor for a variety of countries, and has had the chance to meet many tireless and dedicated teachers and listen to their views on what makes a good coursebook.
Now based near Oxford, Carolyn has two teenage children who keep her on her toes and influence her choice of potential text material. She also has a dog who helps keep her fit and a husband who keeps her sane.
Elaine Boyd

Elaine Boyd writes, teaches and examines English language material. She taught English for over 20 years in Italy,Spain and the UK. She has also been an examiner, both in the UK and abroad, and has written a wide range of exam material for over 15 years. She has particular expertise in Writing, Listening and Speaking exams. She has completed a PhD in Linguistics and has a particular interest in vocabulary. Elaine is currently working on developing online tests in English.

Mary Stephens
Mary Stephens is a qualified teacher (PGCE), and holds the RSA Dip TEFL and an M.Ed. in English Language Teaching.  She has 28 years of teaching experience, both in Spain and in the UK, teaching  EFL to children and adults at a wide range of levels.  Her most recent post was at a College of Further Education just outside London.  She has been an examiner for the Cambridge suite of exams, both oral and written and for Edexel, where she has marked GCSE English written papers. Mary has written and co-written numerous ELT titles at all levels, from Beginners to Proficiency, including the highly successful Practise Writing. She wrote Proficiency Reading and Proficiency Writing., and Michigan Gold.  She co-wrote the coursebook CAE Result! and two coursebooks for First Certificate: Fast Track to First Certificate, and Get on Track for First Certificate. She has also co-written  the course book Activate B2, and the Workbook.  Now a full time writer, Mary lives in Bournemouth.
Suzanne Gaynor

Suzanne Gaynor has been involved in EFL for over twenty years. She has taught in the UK, Germany and Spain and ran her own language school in Mallorca, Spain for three years with her brother. She first dipped into publishing several years ago when she worked on the award-winning, online resource site, Campus for Macmillan in Oxford. Suzanne has also worked as a consultant for Dorling Kindersley on language learning packs for children. Activate B1 was Suzanne’s first book for Pearson and she co-wrote the student book and workbook. She has just finished writing for Pearson’s Top Secret series for younger learners and will shortly begin writing for Activate A2. Suzanne also enjoys writing materials for online learning and has recently become a contributor to Most importantly, Suzanne believes in maintaining a foothold in the classroom and regularly takes on classes – she says it’s the students that inspire her to write her own materials.

Megan Roderick

Megan Roderick first taught EFL in the UK and has since spent 25 years teaching and writing in Greece, where her wide experience of teaching students of all ages and abilities has informed her writing of teaching materials. She is the co-author of the exams course for teenagers, Activate! B1+ and has previously authored a range of EFL publications, including secondary grammar courses and Michigan ECCE and ECPE exam practice books. Her particular interests are the use of grammar in spoken English, the process of conveying meaning through humour, and using cartoon stories and dialogue to bring the language alive.
