by Vivian Shantz

Catherine and Francis

Level: Mid-Intermediate to High-Intermediate

Aims: (i) to practice reading for gist and detailed information
(*Note: In Middle Eastern cultures, the reading topic may be considered taboo).
(ii) to extract a set of phrasal verbs from a text and develop students' inferring skills
(iii) to provide controlled and less controlled practice of the phrasal verbs

Stages

1. Introduction
2. Creating interest in the reading text
3. Pre-teaching key vocabulary items
4. Reading for gist
5. Feedback
6. Reading for detailed information
7. Follow up discussion

Time: 45 minutes

8. Presentation of phrasal verbs (within the reading text)
9. Checking of meaning, form and pronunciation
10. Controlled practice

Time: 45-50 minutes

Total Time: 90-95 minutes

Alternative Lesson Plan A: Use the reading lesson on its own, to develop the reading skill and/or provide extension practice for topics covered in the main text. Example topics: love, marriage, relationships. Total time: 45 minutes.

Build in more free speaking practice at the end and extend the lesson to 60 minutes.

Alternative Lesson Plan B: Present the phrasal verbs separately and in a different context than the one provided by the reading text. In a subsequent lesson, use the reading materials and lesson plan as a means to integrate the target language and show meaning and form in a different context.
