  • listening comprehension
  • phonemic awareness and phonics

Assessment Book (criterion referenced)

The Assessment Book contains standards-based tests for every selection, including summative unit tests. There is also a diagnostic pre-test (given during the first week of school,) a mid-term test, and a post-test (given during the last week of school) so that teachers can measure student progress effectively throughout the year. The complete contents of the assessment book are listed below:
  • Diagnostic pretest: These tests are used to get a baseline on students prior to entering the program and to help teachers determine a course for instruction through the first unit.
  • Midterm test: This test measures progress through the first 3 units
  • Posttest: This test measures progress from units 1-6.
  • Reading tests: There are three reading tests per unit. In grades 1 and 2 these tests assess reading comprehension, words to know, phonics, and grammar. In the other levels these tests assess reading comprehension, key words, academic words, word study, and grammar and writing.
  • Unit tests: Unit assessments address progress in the five sub-tests listed above. Each unit test has a subtest for the following: listening and reading comprehension, vocabulary, word study, spelling, grammar, writing, and oral reading fluency.
  • Test preparation: These materials support students with general test taking tasks and include activities on taking a test, answering items about a passage, answering multiple choice items, answering questions about the meaning of words, and responding to a writing prompt.
