The Value of Longman Bilingual Dictionaries
Tania Saiz-Sousa, Marketing Manager

Longman Bilingual Dictionaries are created specifically for students who are learning English. These dictionaries are equally useful for students looking to find the meaning of an English word, and for students looking for the Spanish equivalents for English words.

The latest offering in the suite of bilingual dictionaries is the brand-new, full-color Longman Diccionario Conciso, an intermediate- to advanced-level dictionary for Latin American students learning English in the US.

The problem with most bilingual dictionaries is that although they help students learn English, they also work to help English students learn another language. In contrast, Longman Bilingual Dictionaries are created specifically for English language learners. This means that on the English-Spanish side of the dictionary, all the information in brackets in the entries and the notes are written in Spanish and explain grammar and usage to Spanish speakers who want to express themselves in English.

This makes the Longman Diccionario Conciso the best ELT bilingual dictionary for Latin American students learning English. Like our other Longman offerings, the Conciso is based on corpus analysis of both English and Latin American Spanish, contains thousands of natural English and natural Spanish examples and phrases that show Latin American learners how to translate words and expressions accurately and idiomatically.

Features of the Diccionario:
  • More than 250,000 words, meanings, phrases and examples
  • 80,000 examples show authentic English and Spanish sentences and natural, idiomatic translations to help students understand the meanings of words and how they are used.
  • Covers all major varieties of Latin American Spanish
  • Usage notes help students avoid the mistakes most commonly made by Latin American learners
  • Synonyms, antonyms and thesaurus notes help students build their vocabulary
  • In entries that have many different meanings, Menus and Signposts written in Spanish on both sides of the page help students to identify and quickly find the meaning that they are looking for, e.g. fair (adjective), fall (verb and noun), dejar, deshacer, etc.
  • A Grammar Guide and Writing Guide help students with grammar, word choice, and writing.

Also available:
The Longman Pronunciation Trainer CD-ROM, featuring:

  • Pronunciation help in those areas which are particularly problematic for speakers of Spanish, students can listen to all pronunciations in American English, then record and check their own pronunciation
  • Bilingual Guía de conversación, giving practical phrases for specific real-life situations.
  • Interactive exercises for help with grammar and vocabulary building.
  • Instant translations of words on the internet, in emails or word documents with the handy pop-up dictionary mode.
