Really Works! Teachers and Students Celebrate a Successful Year with Longman Cornerstone
Tara Maceyak, K-6
Marketing Manager
During the 2008-2009 school
year, Glenwood Springs (CO) Elementary School (GSES) piloted the Longman
Cornerstone program for their kindergarten through fifth
grade English Language Learners (ELLs). The results were amazing!
One of the most notable results was that GSES students who used Longman
Cornerstone showed gains in DRA scores.*
In the fall of 2008, the majority of first grade students were reading
below grade level (70%). By the end of the year, a significant number
of students had made gains reaching grade level benchmarks and beyond.
In fact, 25% of first grade students were reading beyond the expected
grade level benchmark when the Spring 2009 DRA was administered.
The GSES pilot ran from August 2008 to May 2009.
In a video highlighting the program's successes,
teachers and students provide compelling testimonials of the impact of
the program. For example, the program helped to accelerate students'
language acquisition while developing essential academic skills,
enabling English learners to join regular, mainstream classes
more
quickly.
Teachers also shared how using the Cornerstone
program improved Developmental Reading Assessment (DRA) scores as well
as performance on language assessments.
