Literacy Plus: Language, Lifeskills, Civics
by Joan Saslow
Edwina Hoffman, Series Advisor
Literacy Plus: Language, Lifeskills, Civics is an adult
course in English as a second language which starts at absolute beginner
language and literacy level. Learner profile
Written for adult immigrant learners, Literacy Plus A is for students
who are preliterate in their own language and who know no English. Recognizing
the reality that adults can't wait to become literate in order to work
and carry on their lives, Literacy Plus offers instruction in survival
English, basic literacy, and elemental civics concepts at the same time.
Unit structure
Within each of the 10 units, alternating pages are entitled "Literacy"
or "Survival." In this way, students make daily progress on
their pathway to literacy, communication, and mastery of the civics concepts
that enable them to interact confidently with others in the American community
and workplace. A tinted “Teacher” box at the bottom of each page clearly
describes the goals and content of the page. Learner placement and progress
Students may be placed in Literacy Plus A or Literacy Plus B,
according to their level of preliteracy. Students who are preliterate
in their native language should be placed in Literacy Plus A.
When students have completed Literacy Plus A, they should then
be placed in Literacy Plus B. Students who are literate in their
own language, but not literate in English, may be placed directly into
Literacy Plus B. Components of the Literacy Plus course
