This Is My Elbow
Goals: to review vocabulary (body parts); to listen intensively

  1. This game should only be played when students have learned the body part names comfortably. To warm the class up, draw a simple outline of a person on the chalkboard. Write words such as hand, ear, finger, thumb, leg next to these body parts. Elicit as many examples as you can from the class. Write the words elicited on the appropriate part of the drawing.

  2. Ask one student to come to the front of the class. Together demonstrate how the game will be played.

    For example:
Touch your elbow and say, "This is my nose." Explain that the student should reply by touching his or her nose and saying, "This is my elbow." It is now the student's turn to contribute. If the student indicates his or her head while saying, "This is my foot," you should reply by touching your own foot as you say, "This is my head."

  3. Make sure that everyone is quite clear about what is required.

  4. Divide the class into pairs and tell the students to practice as many similar examples as they can. Encourage the students to think of odd combinations. Just because they have used a word once does not mean they need no longer practice it. The more repetition the better!
