FAQ
about Next Generation iBT TOEFL® Test
The TOEFL® Test's
format and content are changing - in a BIG way.
First, the test is now
based on authentic language, a corpus of spoken and
written language culled from actual campus conversations and lectures.
Second, new TOEFL® Test emphasizes integrated skills.
That means the four skills are no longer completely isolated but
are integrated in other parts of the test.
Let Longman Preparation Course for the TOEFL® Test: iBT, Second Edition help your students succeed!
Longman Preparation
Course for the TOEFL® Test: Next Generation iBT addresses
the new test features so your students are fully prepared. These
sample pages will give an idea of all the new content and emphasis:
Listening: The listening portion consists of two conversations
and four academic lectures, all much longer than current passages.
Note-taking is now not only allowed but necessary for successful
completion of tasks. Critical thinking, interpreting, categorizing,
and understanding purpose and stance are necessary skills.

Speaking: Everything
in this section is new. In three separate parts, students
will
- give personal opinions
on topics related to school life,
- respond to a reading
and related spoken lecture, and
- summarize and give
opinions based on two spoken lectures

Reading:
There are fewer passages than beforethree, not four or fivebut
they're much longer, and denser, and more difficult.
Paraphrasing, making inferences, understanding function and rhetorical
purpose, thinking critically, and recognizing overall organization
are part of the mix.

Writing:
As before there's a 30-minute essay on a general question. So what's
new? Now students will read an academic text and then listen to
a related lecture. Then they'll write for 20 minutes (about
200 words) on how the lecture is related to the reading.
