ESOL Strategies for Content Teachers
Facilitating Instruction for English Language Learners

Our highly trained and experienced presenter will come to your school for a full-day, idea-packed workshop which will send you back to your classroom with scores of easy-to-learn, hands-on, practical strategies and activities, as well as guidelines and advice to adapt teaching, classwork, assignments, and assessments to meet the needs of ESOL students in Grades 3-12.

This lively workshop will present strategies to make content more accessible and comprehensible for ESOL students through the understanding and use of teacher-made modifications, including the "how-to's" of:

  • Selecting "important" content
  • Enhancing and simplifying the oral language of teaching
  • Streamlining reading comprehension in the written language of textbooks
  • Developing alternative assignments for written classwork and homework assignments
  • Enhancing instructional techniques
  • Increasing participation in class discussion
  • Adapting assessment techniques to demonstrate true topic knowledge

Presenter, Jodi Reiss

In her nine years as director of the TESOL Master's program at Florida International University in Miami, Jodi Reiss worked closely with K-12 teachers at preservice, inservice, and graduate levels. 

She developed and taught a variety of TESOL courses and collaborated with content area faculty in the College of Education to integrate ESOL issues and strategies into the coursework in their preservice teacher training programs. 

She enjoys presenting at conferences and doing workshops for teachers based on her textbook, ESOL Strategies for Teaching Content: Facilitating Instruction for English Language Learners, recently published by Merrill Prentice Hall.
