Unit 6: The Landscape of Faith
"Teens'
complex query intrigued Dalai Lama" (April 29, 2004), by
Jennifer Lloyd of the Seattle Times. The article reports on a visit by the Dalai Lama to Pasadena,
California, where he solicited questions from attendees. One of
the questions he selected was from students at Seattle's Hazel Wolf
High School: "How can you have the self-confidence to be selfless
without being an individual and still know that you are doing the
right thing?" He took 30 minutes to answer. The
article views the reactions and thoughts of the Hazel Wolf students
and teachers who attended the visit.
Unit 10: The Right to Read
"Libraries Say Yes, Officials Do Quiz Them About Users" (June 20, 2005),
by Eric Lichtblau of The New York Times. A new study commissioned by the American Library Association finds that law enforcement officials have made at least 200 formal and informal inquiries to libraries for information on reading material and other internal matters since October 2001. The study adds grist to the growing debate in Congress over the government's counterterrorism powers.
