Unit 1: Untruth and Consequences

We both love Unit 1, Untruth and Consequences, which focuses on the media and sensationalism. One particular activity that students and teachers enjoy is Section 2, Preparing to Read, exercise 2. In this activity, students are asked to explore the different functions of the media and to come up with some examples. What has worked best for our classes is bringing in different newspapers such as The New York Times, USA Today, and some gossip papers such as The National Enquirer. Having the actual papers to pass around and read gets the students interested immediately!

Another favorite activity for this unit has been a trip to our local Boston Globe newspaper facility. It’s always a highlight seeing the newsrooms, the presses, and the ad room. We do this trip at the end of the unit. Our students are so well prepared by then that they have excellent questions to ask and authentic interest in the trip.
