And the story continues ...

'It can't be that bad,' she said. 'You've been very busy. You're probably very tired. Maybe you just need to talk to someone? Danny perhaps.'

Danny was a friend who worked for another bank. Perhaps Lisa was right. Maybe I should talk to him. I took her back home again and went to Danny's flat.

'So what is it? Work or women?' he asked.

I started to explain the problem. I didn't tell him how big the losses were.

'You need to go away for a few days and think about things,' he said. I agreed.

Lisa and I took a flight to Malaysia and by the evening we were in a hotel in Kuala Lumpur.

The next day, I sent a fax to Barings from the hotel. I told them that I wanted to leave my job. Then, we took another plane to Kota Kinablu in east Malaysia.

I spent my birthday in Kota Kinablu. We stayed in a beautiful hotel with a sky-blue swimming pool, sun umbrellas and very polite waiters. It was very quiet there, very different from the screaming and shouting on the trading floor in Singapore. For the first time in months I began to feel calm.

Lisa gave me birthday presents and cards from my family in England. I loved seeing their writing on the envelopes. I noticed the Queen's head on the stamps. The Queen was a favourite Barings customer.

Lisa's present was an old picture of Singapore. We both laughed.

'I'm never going to see that place again!' I said.

Suddenly, there was a knock at the door. I looked around for somewhere to hide. But it was only a waiter with some food.
