Challenges is a modular course that combines a topic-based approach with a storyline spread that runs through it. Topics covered are related to students’ own world and are also linked to other cultures. It is aimed at 11 to 14 year olds. |
| |
In Challenges student’s books the lessons are self-contained and are presented in a clear way. Each lesson is presented on a double-paged spread and has specific objectives. This is backed up with the teacher’s book which aids the teacher to present the material in a logical way. |
| |
The Challenges course contains a variety of features including Fact or fiction Texts which deal with interesting facts of life. There is an additional CD-ROM which is a fun and valuable complement to the students’ book, providing both extra practice and consolidation. |
| |
There are a range of features on the Challenges course which provide this support. The Understanding Grammar sections focus on tricky areas and the study corners guide students to remedial exercises to deal with their individual problems. Extra vocabulary support is given in
the picture dictionaries and word lists. |
| |
In the Study corner sections at the end of each module, students can check what they have
learned and self-assess themselves. Following this, students work on the Feedback section where they can find out what areas they need to study more and are referred to the workbook for further practice. |
| |
In odd-numbered modules there are projects which focus on creative writing. In even-numbered modules, Your Challenge spots focus on process writing with clear models and carefully staged writing tasks. There are also Text builder boxes which focus on cohesion and coherence. |
| |
The Challenges course provides a wide range of course components including DVD/Video, website, audio CDs/cassettes. This benefits the teacher as they can tailor their course to suit the needs of their students with easy access to support material. |
| |
The Challenges Total Teacher’s pack is a unique component that covers key issues at the core
of teaching and the teaching profession. In addition to this there is the Teacher’s Handbook which gives background information on module topics, suggestions for extra activities and an answer key. |
