Longman Corpus Network
Longman Dictionaries
Real, natural English
All Longman dictionaries are compiled using the Longman Corpus Network – a huge database of 330 million words from a wide range of real-life sources such as books, newspapers and magazines. All the information in our dictionaries, including example sentences, is based on this corpus so you only see real English, as it is really used.
Real, natural phrases and collocations
When you hear a word like ‘blue’, what do you think of? Once in a blue moon? Argue until you’re blue in the face? It’s not always easy to know which words are most naturally used together. One of the main benefits of working with the Longman Corpus Network is that we can give full coverage of thousands of natural word combinations (or collocations).
Avoid common mistakes
Longman dictionaries are written specially for learners, and we make sure that they get all the help they need to avoid common mistakes. Using the Longman Learner’s Corpus – 12 million words of students’ essays and exam scripts – we analyse typical learners’ mistakes and include notes on how to avoid them.
The difference between speaking and writing
By using the pioneering Longman Spoken Corpus – a collection of recordings of over 3000 American and British English speakers we are able to provide helpful information on the difference between spoken and written English. The Longman Dictionary of Contemporary English is the only advanced learner’s dictionary that explains differences in frequency between spoken and written English, helping students to use English more naturally.

Express yourself with confidence!
Longman has led the way in ELT dictionaries since 1935. We constantly talk to students and teachers around the world to find out what they need from a learner’s dictionary. Each new edition uses the latest technology to ensure that our dictionaries provide every possible support. Our aim is to get your students communicating confidently in English.
Easy to understand
Longman invented the Defining Vocabulary – 2000 of the most common words – in 1935. These 2000 words are used to write the definitions in our dictionaries, so Longman definitions are always clear and easy to understand.
