I am using Windows Vista, and I get an error message when I try to install or run the software.

Please try running the dictionary in XP compatibility mode. To do this, right click the Longman Advanced American Dictionary desktop shortcut and select 'properties' then the 'compatibility' tab and choose 'Windows XP (Service Pack 2)' from the dropdown list. Tick the 'Run as administrator' checkbox at the bottom.

My computer freezes when I try to install the software

If your computer freezes when you are installing the software there are several possible causes.

1. The most common is that there are programs running in the background that are preventing the installation software from running. Try the following:

a) Re-start your computer by pressing the Control+Alt+Delete keys.

b) Shut down all programs, including any that might be running in the background, such as anti-virus software. To do this you can right click on the icons on the taskbar at the bottom right of your screen, and select "Exit" or "Close".

c) Try installing the program again.

2. A second possibility is that you need to install a new CD-ROM driver. For Windows 95/98/ME to run efficiently it needs to use the latest 32 bit CD-ROM drivers. The section below explains how to check your current drivers, and how to update them.

If you still cannot install the program, click here to e-mail our support team.

I have reinstalled the software, and now it doesn't work On some computers, the CD-ROM will stop working (or not play sounds) after you have reinstalled the software to a different location on your computer, or if you have used different install preferences. To solve this problem, either download the automatic fix or correct the problem manually:

Automatic Fix:

laad_update.zip - You must have WinZip to open this zip file.

Manual Fix:

If the dictionary is re-installed to a different location or with a different profile (Full, Standard, Minimal) then the Longman directory must be deleted manually from the following directories:

If you are using NT: c:\Windows\Profiles\username\Application Data\longman\Lad001pe

If you are using XP or 2000: c:\documents and settings\username\Application Data\Longman\Lad001pe

Note, on XP & w2000 the application data folder is hidden. To see this folder go to the Folder menu: Tools -> Folder Options -> View -> Show hidden folders.

"username" above stands for any user who has used the dictionary.

I am using Windows NT/Windows 2000/Windows XP, and I get an error message when I try to install the software.

If you get an error message such as "You must be an Administrator to install programs on this computer" this means that you need to be logged on as an Administrator to install the CD. If you are on a networked computer (for example in a school or college, or on a company network) you may need to speak to your network administrator.

The pop-up dictionary isn't working

The pop-up dictionary mode works with the following programs and operating systems:

Win95/98/WinME:
Word 97
Word 2000
IE4 and above
Netscape 4 and above
Acrobat Reader
Wordpad
Outlook

Win NT/Win 2000:
Word 97
Word 2000
IE4 and above

In addition, pop-up mode will work in some versions of Outlook and Outlook Express.
If your word processor or browser isn't listed here you can only use the pop-up dictionary by manually copying your word into the dictionary. Once you have copied the word you can paste the word into the dictionary using the Control + V keys.

Do I need to have the CD in the CD drive for the program to work?

You can choose from three types of installation:

Minimal - The program will only run if the CD is present
Standard - The program runs from the hard drive but sounds will not play unless the CD is present
Full - The program runs from the hard drive
