FAQs For Windows users:

I get the following message when I am trying to do a full install "Wrong volume is in the drive. Please insert volume Ldoce_CD1 in to drive D"

If you get this message, select "Cancel", uninstall the software you have just installed, and then re-install it. If you continue to get this message then try to clean the shiny side of disk 2 using a soft cloth between installations.

An error message appears when I install.

If you are using a computer on a network, you must be logged on as Administrator to install the CD. You must run the CD under the Administrator log-on once, and then you can use it under your own log-on name.

LDOCE doesn’t work if Quicktime 7 is installed

If you have installed Quicktime 7 and LDOCE doesn’t start or the sound and video don’t work, please download the following:

ldoce4v2_patch.zip (4.1MB)

Extract/unzip the file and double click it
Follow the on-screen instructions
You should get a message confirming the patch has been successfully applied.

If you are using Windows Vista, also set the dictionary to run as an administrator. To do this, right click the Longman Dictionary of Contemporary English desktop shortcut and select 'properties' then the 'compatibility' tab and tick the 'Run as administrator' checkbox at the bottom.

LDOCE audio and video should now work OK.

The pop up mode doesn't work.

If you have problems getting the dictionary to grab words in pop up mode remember that in some applications you may have to point the cursor to the word AND then press the CTRL key.

Do I need to have the CD in the CD drive for the programme to work? If so, which one?

The answer depends on what you want the CD to do and which installation you have used. If you have performed a minimal install, you must keep CD 1 in the CD drive at all times while using the program. If you want to hear the headword pronunciations you must

a.) have installed using the ‘Full’ installation. This means that all the headword pronunciations have been copied onto your computer. You will no longer need either disc.

b.) have installed using the ‘Recommended’ installation. All headword pronunciations have been copied onto your computer. If you want to also hear sentences examples pronounced in ‘recommended’ installation, you must have CD 2 in the CD-ROM drive of your computer.

c.) If you have installed using the 'Medium' or 'Minimal' installation, you will need to keep CD 1 in the CD-ROM drive of your computer.

If you want to hear the example sentences you must either

a.) have installed using the 'Full' installation. This means that all the pronunciations of the examples have been copied onto your computer.

b.) have installed using the 'Recommended' installation and have CD 2 in the CD-ROM drive of your computer.

If you have installed using a 'Minimal' or 'Medium' installation, you will not be able to hear the example sentences. If you want to hear pronunciations of the example sentences you must reinstall using 'Recommended' or 'Full' installation. Be sure to Uninstall the dictionary first.

I get the following message when I try to run the CD " No disc inserted. Please insert the original disc of Longman Dictionary of Contemporary English 2005"

This message appears the first time you run the CD if you do not have the disc in the drive. You must insert the disc in order to demonstrate to the program that you have an authentic copy of the CD-Rom.

Save and unzip this file on to your computer.
Then replace the original Ldoce.EXE file found in your install directory (C:\Program Files\Longman\ldoce4v2) with the new version inside this zip file.

LDOCE should now work OK.

LDOCE 4 doesn't work with Kaspersky Anti-virus installed

Download this file: ldoce4.zip (4.6MB)

Open the folder where the LDOCE CD-ROM is installed i.e.
c:\program files\longman\ldoce4v2\
Rename your original 'LDOCE.exe' to 'LDOCE4_old.exe'
Extract/unzip the ldoce4.zip file and copy the new 'LDOCE4.exe' into: c:\program files\longman\ldoce4v2\

LDOCE should now work OK.

FAQ for Mac and Linux users:

The audio doesn't work on MAC OSX with QuickTime 7 or later.

Download the following patch: ldoce4v2_patch.sit (4.3MB) and save it to your desktop.

Uncompress the patch.
Open the folder where the LDOCE CD-ROM is installed i.e. Applications.

Ctrl and click on the LDOCE icon.
Click on: "Show Package Contents"
Open the MAC OS folder

Open each of the newly uncompressed folders in turn, selecting all the files inside the folder then copy these to the relevant original folder.

For example, with the 'components' folder:

Open the new 'components' folder and select all the files in the folder and copy them. Open the original 'components' folder so it shows all the existing files and then paste the new files directly in.

Repeat the above process for the other new folders and finally, remove files "components/compreg.dat" and "xpti.dat". Don't worry if these files do not appear.

I'm running OS 10.2.8, is something wrong with my phonetic font?

Users who are running Mac OS 10.2.8 may experience a problem with the stress markers in compound headwords causing part of the word to overlap with the grammatical information in the entry. Unfortunately, there is no solution to this problem. We offer our apologies.
This problem does not occur if you upgrade to OS 10.3.

Do I need to have the CD in the CD drive for the program to work?

If you want to hear the headword pronunciations, you do not need either disk in the drive. Mac and Linux users only have one choice of installation-the 'Recommended' installation. This means that all headword pronunciations have been copied to your computer and can play without CD 1 or 2 in the CD-ROM drive of your computer.

If you want to hear the pronunciations of the example sentences you must have CD 2 in the CD-ROM drive of your computer.

The pop up mode doesn't work

Mac and Linux users must type (or copy and paste) words or phrases into the Web/email Pop Up dictionary. There are no keyboard shortcuts.

An error message appears when I install
