What is the TOEFL® Test?

DESCRIPTION

The TOEFL® Test is a USA based exam

You can take an internet based test or a paper based test depending on the test centres near you.

The TOEFL® Test is often required for entry to a university in the USA or other countries.

The TOEFL® Paper Based Test has 4 sections:

  • Listening Comprehension  30-40 minutes
  • Structure and Written Expression  25 minutes
  • Reading  55 minutes to answer 50 questions
  • Writing (test of Written English)  30 minutes to write on 1 topic

The TOEFL® Internet Based Test has 4 sections:

  • reading  60-100 minutes to answer 36-70 questions
  • listening 60-90 minutes to answer 34-51 questions based on lectures, classroom discussions and other conversations
  • break
  • speaking  20 minutes on two tasks to express opinion on a familiar topic then tasks on what is read and listened to
  • writing  50 minutes to write 1 task based on what is read and heard and 1 task to support an opinion on a topic

There are two types of TOEIC® Test for each of these categories:

  • Listening and Reading
  • Speaking and Writing (delivered via the internet)
Latest statistics show that around 5 million people take the test every year
