Help with downloading Adobe PDF files

When you have finished reading, close this window.

What are PDF files?
PDF stands for Portable Document Format. You download a PDF file from the Internet and then look at it using Adobe Acrobat.

Why download PDF files?
You will be able to download professional looking material to photocopy and use in class.

Why are PDF files popular?
PDF files are very popular because they are the best way to send a document across the Internet.

With PDFs you can send a document from one computer to another and it will look the same, a bit like sending a letter. And like letters, you do not have to be connected to the Internet to read them, only to download them.

What do I need to download PDF files?
The only thing you need (apart from a computer and Internet connection) is Adobe Acrobat.

Adobe Acrobat is a free software programme. It is easy to get so don't be afraid. Just follow these simple instructions.

How to download Adobe Acrobat:
1. Click on the Adobe logo below. This will take you to the Adobe website.

2. First you are asked what programme you want from a choice of three.
Acrobat Reader is free and the others cost money.

3. The Adobe site then asks you for some information:

- the language you require
- what platform you are using (e.g. Windows 95, Mac OS etc)
- your name
- your email address

4. When you have filled in the information you click on download.

Do you use a Mac or a PC?

PC Users
If you are using a PC you need to have at least Windows 95. Don't worry, you almost certainly have this. You will then be asked if you want to save the file to disk or open it from the location. Choose save the file to disk.

It is a good idea to create a folder called ‘downloads' for everything you download from the Internet. This is because it is easy to forget where you have put a download. It can be really annoying if you have to search for it. It's a bit like losing your keys.

When Adobe has downloaded, follow the instructions on screen. This may sound a bit complicated but it is actually very easy … a piece of cake!

When you have Adobe Acrobat you can download any PDF file from the Internet. You just click on the file. Then you can print it and photocopy it to give to your students.

Mac Users
If you are using a Mac you need at least Mac OS 7.1.2. Don't worry, you almost certainly have this. Click on download. When the programme has finished downloading, an icon will probably appear on your desk top screen. You double-click on this icon and then follow the instructions on screen. This may sound a bit complicated but it is very easy … easy as pie!
