Paper 1 Reading (1 hour 15 minutes)

Content

Four texts with approx. 50 questions:

  • multiple matching
  • gapped text
  • multiple-choice tasks
  • multiple matching

Test Focus

  • skimming and scanning for the main ideas and specific information
  • understanding text structure
  • detailed understanding of the text
  • finding specific information in a long text

Paper 2 Writing (2 hours)

Content

Part 1 - One or two tasks in response to reading input

Part 2 - One task from a choice of four, eg letters, articles, memos, etc

Test Focus

  • applying information, selecting, summarising and comparing
  • writing for a specific target reader, using appropriate layout, style and register

Paper 3 Use of English (1 hour 30 minutes)

Content

Six tasks with 80 questions:

  • multiple-choice cloze
  • open cloze
  • error-correction text
  • word formation
  • register transfer
  • gap filling

Test Focus

  • understanding lexis
  • understanding grammatical patterns
  • identifying extra wrong words or spelling/punctuation

Paper 4 Listening (45 minutes approx.)

Content

Four parts with 30/40 questions:
Part 1 and 2 - sentence completion or note taking tasks
Part 3 - sentence completion or multiple choice
Part 4 - Five short extracts with multiple-matching or multiple-choice tasks

Test Focus

  • understanding the text as a whole and detailed information
  • understanding specific information, opinions and attitudes
  • identifying speakers, topic, context, function, opinion and specific information

Paper 5 Speaking (15 minutes approx.)

Content

Four parts:

  • exchange of information
  • long turn to speak based on visual stimulus
  • problem-solving discussion between candidates
  • continued discussion with examiners

Test Focus

  • exchanging personal information
  • describing, hypothesising and commenting on prompts
  • negotiating, collaborating and reaching an agreement
