The Savage Earth, a website to accompany a television series, looks at natural disasters and the science that attempts to understand them.

Have any of your class ever had experience of severe weather or a natural disaster such as an earthquake? If so what were their experiences?

Read more about Easter Island and discover more about the island, its civilisation and what eventually caused its downfall.

Get your class to look at how the destruction of the society on Easter Island can serve as a lesson to the world as a whole. For example, one of the main problems caused by the islanders was deforestation, which eventually led to war. How is deforestation currently affecting the world as we know it? Could it lead to the same consequences for us as it did for the islanders?
