In Touch 1 Tips

Tip 1. Number & Memory Game

There are games in the In Touch Student's Book and in the Teacher's Book but you can also build up a your own collection of games that are suitable for the last few minutes of your lessons.

Here are some suggestions for number games:

Tip…

  1. Go round the class with pupils saying numbers in order. Every
    time there is a number with a 3 in it or the number is dividable by 3
    then the pupil says Buzz and not the number. This can also be done
    with the numbers 4 or 5.
  2. Write the numbers from 1 to 10 lots of times and at random on the board. Divide the class into two teams.
    Call one member from each team to the front. Call out a number e.g. 29, 102 so that pupils have to join two or three numbers on the board to make the number.
    The first pupil that circles the correct number wins a point for his/ her team.

Tip 2. Motivation & Correction tips

At the beginning of the school year your pupils need special encouragement. It is extremely demotivating for them if you
give back their homework covered with corrections. Here is a suggested procedure:

  1. Only correct one type of error e.g spelling, punctuation or short forms for each piece of homework.
  2. Tell your pupils which errors you have corrected when you give back their homework.
  3. Explain and help pupils with common mistakes on the blackboard.
  4. Ask pupils to write out three corrected sentences from their homework.

Tip 3. Skills Building for Senior A students

  1. The skills lessons in In Touch 1 are very important and should not be omitted. If your students do these lessons then they should not need an extra skills book.

    However, if you still want to have an extra skills book for your students then you could do the In Touch skills lessons in the skills book lessons rather than spend time on them in the In Touch lessons

  2. At the end of all the Skills Specials there is a writing task which is suitable for homework. In the workbook there is also a writing task on the Skills Special pages. It would be impossible for your students to complete both these writing tasks for one homework period so you should chose one of the following options:


    1. Set the skills special pages in the workbook for homework on a different day.

      or

    2. Chose either the writing task in the student's book or the one in the workbook for homework. Please note that the writing task in the workbook is slightly easier than the one in the student's book. Therefore another option would be to give this one to the weaker students in the class while other students do the task from the student's book.

Tip 4. How to use the In Touch Students' CD

An important component of the In Touch course is the Students' CD. (If any students don't have a CD player then tell them to record the CD onto a cassette on a friends CD /cassette player.)
Here are a couple of suggestions how to use this component.

  1. Dictation can really help your students' spelling in English. It is therefore a good idea to give a dictation task every week. Choose four or five lines from the input passage of the lessons for dictation. Tell your students to listen to these lines at home several times on the Students' CD and read the lines from the Students' book at the same time. They can then compare the oral and written form. If your pupils do this, you will see that they will be more successful when you give them the dictation.
  2. The stories in the In Touch series are usually in two or three parts. Ask your students to listen to the appropriate part of the story in advance of the reading in class. You will find this cuts down enormously on the time you have to spend on the presentation of the story in the class.

Tip 5. Using the In Touch website as a Class Activity

Another important component of the In Touch series is the web site. If you are reading this then you are making use of the In Touch web site.

But are your students using the web site? If you don't have a computer with an Internet connection in your school then perhaps your students can use their parents' or older brother or sister's computer.

Tell your pupils to:

  1. Find www.InTouchClub.net
  2. Click on the red STUDENTS button.
  3. Click on READ ABOUT WORLD FRIENDS.
  4. Find out the names, ages, and countries of these world friends and bring this information to you so they can put the stickers on the world map. These stickers and the world map are provided free for every class using the In Touch series by the Longman Office in Athens.

Teachers, if only you have access to a computer with an Internet connection then you should:

  1. Find www.InTouchClub.net
  2. Click on the blue TEACHERS button.
  3. Click on EXTRA ACTIVITIES.
  4. Print out the materials under this section and give them to your students to read. Then the students can find out the information to add the stickers to the world map.

Tip 6. Encourage your students to e-mail other students

Encourage your students to send emails to other students in Greece and in other countries if they have access to a computer with an Internet connection. Making use of their knowledge of English in a real situation is extremely motivating and the best practice of all for them.
Tell them to:

  1. Find www.InTouchClub.net.
  2. Click on the red STUDENTS button.
  3. Click on KEEP IN TOUCH WITH WORLD FRIENDS.
  4. Register on the website.
  5. Read the emails from other students and write back to them.

Tip 7. Vocabulary Revision

Keep giving revision on vocabulary because young students easily forget new words. Here are two ideas.

  1. At the end of a cycle of four input lessons i.e. before you start a revision or a skills lesson, cover the blackboard with the new words introduced in those lessons. Divide the students into two teams. Ask members of the teams in turn to choose a word on the blackboard and make a sentence with it. A correct sentence scores a point for the appropriate team.
  2. At the end of a lesson read out sentences from the lesson or make up your own sentences with the new words missing. Say the sentences to the class and the pupils have to repeat the sentences adding the missing word e.g. Lesson 5 - Bill and Jill are Kim's….. (parents). Goldie is the ….. of Kim's cat. (name)

Tip 8. Singing songs

Most children of this age enjoy singing songs and songs are invaluable for learning the stress and rhythm of a language. Do encourage the students to sing the songs even if this is not given as instructions in the lesson. e.g. Exercise 4a and 4b page 35, lesson 11.
