In Touch 3 Tips

Tip 1. The Link

Please note the cartoon pages have been replaced at this level with a 'web page' from the internet which is linked to the topic introduced in the In Touch Club pages. Hence it's name The Link.

At this level the students need more practice at reading and are more interested in general topics. The Link lessons provide this and are also helping to prepare students forthcoming exams such as First Certificate.

The teacher's book gives specific guidance as to how these Link pages should be taught but generally it is a good idea to get the students to listen to the presentation passage at home on the CD with presentation passages which is given free with the student's book.

This way the students can familiarize themselves with the unknown words and the topic before the lesson. Occasionally ask students to talk about what they have heard on the CD as an introduction to the lesson.

Tip 2. Using Authentic Material in Class

After your students have read The Link it is a good idea to ask them to bring in books or articles on these topics into the classroom. This will encourage students to talk and read more on the topics. A couple of the lessons have Projects attached to them but all The Link lessons could lead into a topic of the students' choice based on information brought into the classroom.

Tip 3. Story Time

Story Time is an important section in the In Touch series because stories make language memorable. At level 3 it is a good idea to use the telling of stories to revise vocabulary and new structures. The stories in level 3 can be retold around the class, for example. Also the following activity can be done at the end of each cycle of four input lessons before the revision and skills lessons.

  1. Divide the class into two teams.
  2. Write three words or phrases taken from the cycle on the blackboard.
  3. A student from Team A has to start a story, which must include the words or phrases on the blackboard. When he/she have done this he/she ' Pass'. If this has been done satisfactorily then the team scores one point.
  4. Then write three more words or phrases on the blackboard from the cycle and repeat the process with Team B.

e.g Cycle 2 Lessons 9 - 12

interesting pass an examination concert

John was studying at home when he heard the telephone ring. It was his friend, Sue. 'I've got five tickets for the Five Boys Concert tonight. Do you want to come?' she asked.
'Oh, yes!' answered John. Then he felt terrible. He had to take his examination in French and the exam was on Friday - the day after the concert. He had to pass this exam. PASS

Tip 4. Extra Reading

After the students have read the stories in the Story Time, encourage them to read other stories. Most students have difficulty passing from intermediate level to advanced level because they don't read and therefore don't consolidate the language they have learnt or build up a passive knowledge of vocabulary and grammatical structures.

Tip 5. Communication with e-pals

Encourage your students to continue or start sending emails to other readers of the In Touch Club. Remind your students how to use the In Touch Club website:

  1. Find the website www.InTouchClub.net
  2. Click on the red STUDENTS button.
  3. Click on KEEP IN TOUCH WITH WORLD FRIENDS.
  4. Register by completing the In Touch Club Club form.s
  5. Read the emails from other students and write back to one of them that is the same age as themselves. If they can't find a reader to write to then they should write a letter to the website about themselves and the kind of person they wish to write to e.g a boy aged 14 who is interested in photography.

Tip 6. Personalisation

Now that your students are older they are probably more interested in the information sections at the beginning of the Londoners. Try to use these information pieces to personalise the language. e.g Lesson 1 - Talk about their parents attitude towards DIY; Lesson 5 - Talk about the television channels in Greece.

Ask your students to go back and read the other information pieces from Book 1 and 2 and ask them to talk about all the things they have learnt about life in London.

Tip 7. Skills Development

It is advisable not to omit the Skills Special lessons as they are specially designed to guide your students into the kind of tasks required for the First Certificate examination. However, if you have extra skills lessons and there is a time pressure then they could be omitted or they could be covered in the skills lessons rather than the coursebook lessons.
