Guesstimates
Goals: to practice vocabulary; to talk about prices;
to do math problems
1.
Cut out large pictures of a variety of household objects
and glue them to pieces of construction paper. Cut off
the prices, but keep a list of them on a separate sheet
of paper.
2. Divide the class into two teams. One member from
each team participates in each round of the game.
3. To play the game, show two or three objects to the
first two players. Tell them the total amount of money
they can spend. Have them guess which objects they could
buy without going over the budget you have given them.
4. The player who chooses an amount that covers the
purchase of all the objects without going over the budget
wins the round and earns 100 points for his or her team.
The team with the most points after ten rounds wins.
For example:
You set a $1,000 limit. You show three pictures: a couch
(which costs $400), a coffee table (which costs $100),
and a lamp (which costs $75). Team 1 bids $600 and Team
2 bids $800. Team 1 wins because they came closest to
the total price of the objects ($575) without going
over the limit ($1,000).
5. After each round, write the name and price of each
object on the chalkboard and do the math together.
