Theresa ZanattaStudent Letters for a Home-School Connection

by Theresa Zanatta

I usually do this activity at the end of the class. I take the last five minutes and hand out paper to each student for writing a letter home. On the first line, we write together:

Dear Mom and Dad (or whatever is appropriate),

On the next line we write:

Here is a list of 5 words that we are learning in English class:
1.
2.
3.
4.
5.

I tell the students that they have three minutes to choose five words from the poster or the poster/word wall collage and to write them on their letter. I use these few minutes to go around and help students who have difficulty copying and writing. The students copy, and then they complete the letter with this last sentence and a closing:

I know some/all of these words.

Love,

Student's name

Students love to take home these letters that they have written and to show their family the words they can read and write and explain! These are our signs of success!
