Bingo is famously played by old people in large halls in Britain. It is also a great game for teaching pronunciation and particularly minimal pairs.
Aim
To develop students' confidence in using the target language.
You need
A set of four cards for each student like the one below. Each card should have six empty spaces.
Procedure
1. |
Decide which sounds you want the students to be able to recognise and make a list of around 30 words that use one of those sounds. Some words should be similar e.g. bird, beard. |
| |
| 2. |
Make cards like the one below and write in words from that list. Make sure that you write the words in randomly to make each card different. |
| |
| 3. |
Give each student, or pair of students, one of the cards with six words on it.
| Card 1 |
sink |
well |
rain |
| pair |
tear |
see |
| Card 2 |
think |
bell |
lane |
| bear |
chair |
she |
| Card 3 |

| Card 4 |

| |
| |
| 4. |
Read out words from your list at random but keep a note of the words you read out. If a student has one of the words you read out, they should cover it with a small piece of paper (so that you can use the cards again). |
| |
| 5. |
The winner is the one whose words have all been read out. |
| |
| 6. |
You can re-play the game as often as you like, getting the students to take it in turns to be 'teacher' and read out the words. |
