Aim
To develop awareness of phonemic sounds in English and practise vocabulary.

You need
Paper.

Procedure

1.

Give the students between six and ten categories of things, e.g. food, colours, countries, clothes. The lower the level of your group, the broader the category should be.

2.   Ask the students to work in pairs. Give the class a vowel sound from the phonemic chart, e.g. /i:/ as in sheep. Give everyone three minutes to try to find one word for each category that contains the sound.

3.   After three minutes, stop everyone. Pairs get a mark for each correct word that contains the sound and is in the right category. Give extra points if a student thinks of a word that you have taught in the last week.
