Grammar noughts and crosses

Noughts and crosses can be adapted to review and practise grammar. This is a team game which is probably best played with the whole class. If this is not feasible, you can split the class into smaller teams and have two or three games going on simultaneously.

Aim
To revise a range of grammar points.

You need
A list of questions covering eight grammatical areas that your students have studied fairly recently.

Procedure

1.

Write the grammatical areas you have chosen in the outside squares of a noughts and crosses grid. 'Miscellaneous' goes in the middle and the questions you ask in this section can probably be more difficult than the others.

regular past tenses irregular past tenses word order in

'much' or 'many' 'less' or 'fewer' countable/

2.   Each team takes it in turn to choose a box e.g. countable/uncountable. You then ask them a relevant question, e.g. 'Give me three uncountable and three countable nouns'. You and your class can decide whether or not to allow conferring amongst the team.

3.   If they get the answer right you put their symbol on the grid (a nought or a cross) in the relevant square. If they get it wrong, or can't answer, the other team gets a chance to answer.

4.   The winning team is the one which makes a straight line (vertical, horizontal or diagonal) of correct answers.
