Talking about likes and dislikes

Students like to discuss the sports and other activities they enjoy, like or dislike. Try this activity to get them really talking about what they think rather than just practising the structure of like/hate + -ing.

Aim
To practise talking about likes and dislikes with a range of vocabulary for sports and leisure activities and adjectives to describe the activities.

You need
A copy of the grid below for each student.

Procedure

1.

Give each student a copy of the grid below and brainstorm to add some more sports or activities of their own to the empty boxes at the end.

2.   Ask students what they think of the sports and activities. Check they know the meanings of the adjectives at the top of the column. Ask them to tick the boxes with the adjectives that show what they think.

Alternatively, get students to work in pairs and ask their partner questions. They then tick the chart with their partner's answers.

3.   Ask students to go around the class. Tell them to find at least two people who have the same opinions as they do about three of the sports and activities. They should ask questions to find out what other students think. They can write the names in the boxes, or make notes on the sheet.

Example
Do you think playing tennis is difficult?

No, I think it's quite easy.

Do you think using the Internet is useful?

Yes, but it can be boring as well.

4.

Get feedback at the end. Ask students to find out which is the most popular sport or activity and which one students like least.

5.   The winner is the last remaining student.

Extension

1.

Delete the verbs from the grid (go, play, use etc.) Write do , play , go , use on the board. Ask students to choose the correct verb that collocates with the nouns.

2.   Get students to produce a bar chart showing how many students like each activity or sport.
