  • Tell the children to cut out the puppets and colour Eko green, and Tina blue and yellow.

  • Say: Show me Eko. Show me Tina. The children hold up the correct puppet.

  • Children can stick these puppets onto a pencil, ready to use later in the lesson.

Bingo cards

Bingo cards
An activity to teach family words and prepare family Bingo cards
  • Hand out the family Bingo cards to the children. Tell the children they are going to meet Eko's family. Ask them to tell you any family words they know.

  • Focus the children's attention on the different members of Eko's family and say: Mum and dad, granny and grandad, brother and sister, baby. Model the words and ask the children to repeat them after you.

  • Ask the children to point to the characters at random. Say: Point to (mum and dad), etc. Vary the order and pace of the instructions.

  • Help the children to cut out the cards. Make sure all the sets are complete by saying: Show me (granny and grandad), etc. The children hold the relevant card up.

  • If you have time, the children can colour the cards. Then you can play one or both of the games below to practise family vocabulary.

Board game
Eko and Tina Board game

A board game to consolidate colours, classroom and family vocabulary

  • Revise the colours red, yellow, green and blue by showing the children a red, yellow, green and blue crayon. Ask them to close their eyes, then hide a crayon behind your back and ask them to say which one it is.

  • Revise classroom vocabulary by pointing to objects in the classroom and asking the children what they are: table, chair, bag, board.

  • Tell the children they are going to play a board game to practise colour, classroom and family vocabulary.

  • If you have Eko and Tina 1 Pupils' Book, you can use the board game which is on page 21. Or you can use the interactive board game. If you have a projector, you can project the game onto the screen for the whole class to see. They can play in two teams: one team can be Eko, and the other Tina. They could use their Eko and Tina puppets as mascots.

  • Alternatively, the children can play the board game in pairs, either on screen, or in the Pupils' Book.

  • To play the game you will need a dice with the numbers 1 and 2 on it. Alternatively you can use a small piece of paper with number 1 written on one side and number 2 on the other, or a coin. If you are using the book, children will also need a small object to use as a counter. If the 'dice' lands on number 1 the children can move forwards one square on the board game. If it lands on number 2, they move forward 2 squares.

  • Demonstrate the game. Tell the children that they need to start in the top left corner of the board. If you are using the book, throw the 'dice' and ask them to move their counter one or two squares. Encourage them to say the name of the colour, classroom object or family member on the square they have landed on. If you are playing on screen, the children can click the square they have 'landed' on, to see a large version of the picture and the written form of the word.
