The Gingerbread Boy
How to use the Gingerbread Boy Activity

Main Activities

Language Aims

  • To consolidate understanding of The Gingerbread Boy story
Materials
  • Story on screen taken from pages 34 and 35, Pebbles Students' Book 1
  • Finger puppet templates (one puppet per child)
  • Card, glue, scissors and colours
1 Beginning the Lesson

Ask children to tell you what they can remember about The Gingerbread Boy story using as much English as possible. Elicit the refrain You can't catch me. I'm the Gingerbread Boy and get pupils to repeat and practise.

2 Teaching and Practice

Making finger puppets. Tell children they are going to make puppets of the characters in the story. Hold up the templates and point to each of the characters to elicit their names: The Gingerbread Boy, the mummy, the daddy, the horse, the cow and the fox. Divide your class into groups of six representing the six characters and let children choose which puppet they want to make. Alternatively to avoid any disputes, put the templates into a hat or box, tell pupils to close their eyes and to pull one out. They make the puppet for this template.

Demonstrate how to stick the picture onto the card (you may prefer to do this stage in advance for your pupils), cut it out and cut the holes for the legs. Use as much English as possible and help when necessary. Show children how to put their fingers through the holes to make the puppets' legs and to make them move. If there is time, children can also colour their puppets. Allow a short time for free play with the puppets.

3 Look at the story on screen or on pages 34 and 35 of Pebbles Students' Book 1. Tell the story encouraging children to join in with the refrain. You can't catch me. I'm the Gingerbread Boy.

4 Tell the story again, pausing after each character, getting the children to repeat the words for their finger puppet character. For example, children with the mummy finger puppets will repeat Eyes, nose, mouth. A boy! A Gingerbread Boy! etc.

5 In groups of six, one pupil per character, pupils practise the story acting it out with their finger puppets, moving their fingers to make it look as if the puppets are running as they say their words. It is not expected that the pupils will remember all the words but they should try to act out the story as much as possible in the correct sequence and through a combination of words, mime and actions. Circulate and help as necessary. If your class does not divide exactly into groups of six, one pupil could play two roles as the horse, cow and farmer have small roles.

6 Once the groups are confident, invite them to come to the front and act out the story for the other groups.

7 Find the Gingerbread Girl! Explain to the class in L1 that the Gingerbread Girl is hiding in one of the story pictures. Ask them to look for her (she is hiding in picture 6).

8 Ending the Lesson

Collect in the puppets by calling "Gingerbread Boys come here!" etc. Dismiss the class and store the puppets for the next lesson.
